At Scales Plantation, our approach to a back to nature experience allows you a private encampment situated in woodland with views overlooking the North Lake Fells.
Blencathra is situated at the edge of Scales Plantation and has views over farm land and hills. The camp provides sleeping accommodation in up to two beautifully crafted Plankbridge Shepherd huts. Each shepherds hut has a double bed at one end and bunk beds at the other, sleeping four in total comfort. The bunk beds can be folded down into a seating area if not required.
Feather duvets and cotton bed linen are provided, a wood burning stove will keep you warm and as the shepherds huts are fully insulated they are the perfect way to enjoy an outdoor camping experience all year round.
Each hut is has a solar power pack which will provide lighting and a socket for appliances under 300w, such as fans and radios..
The camp includes an outside dinning area and a BBQ pit for those who are die hard campfire cooks, but as the weather sometimes puts a bit of a dampener on outdoor cooking there is also a kitchen/dining shelter with a wood burning range cooker, gas hob and gas fridge, well equipped kitchen area and sink. Lighting is provided by a solar power pack. The shelter is a wooden structure which has canvas panels that can be kept shut or rolled fully open
As we have provided somewhere warm and dry for our guests to sleep, cook and eat we thought it only fair to carry this amount of comfort through to the bathroom. You can bath or shower in comfort as the bathroom shelter, which leads off the dinning area, has hot water provided by a LPG boiler and a small wood burner to warm the room. You also have the option of rolling back a canvas panel if slightly more open air bathing appeals, ( your modesty is protected by a very small fenced garden, so you are completely private). We provide towels but do ask that any soap and shampoo is biodegradable.
There is a free standing, self-composting toilet in the camp which that has solar lighting leading to it, we do still recommend that you bring a torch.
There is parking for two cars.
You will be supplied with an adequate amount of firewood for the length of your stay.
Check in is at 4.00pm and check out at 10.00am.
Guests must inform us at least two days prior to their stay if they think they will arrive later. This is so someone is available to show them around the camp

All of the above are Shepherd Hut camps and will be similar to Blencathra.
A Shepherd Hut Encampment
A Shepherd Hut Encampment will include sleeping accommodation in bespoke Scales Plantation Shepherds Huts crafted by Plankbridge. As Shepherds Huts were originally designed for shepherds to tend their flocks, each hut can sleep up to 4 people in total comfort, with a double bed at one end and bunk beds at the other. The fully insulated huts include a wood burning stove and all electricity is provided by a solar power pack in line with our Environmental Policy. All bedding and bed linen is provided. We will also supply you with enough logs for your stay.
The camp will have it's own personal kitchen/bathroom shelter comprising of
-gas hob
- fridge
- sink
- wood burning range
- dining area
- clothes drying area
- private shower
- washbasin
- semi open air bath for the more adventurous (blinds can be drawn!)
The clearing also includes a barbecue pit for open air catering, outside seating and enough space to truly relax in.
To continue our work protecting our environment, each camp has a free standing self composting toilet (a loo with a fantastic view)
